“Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the LORD Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.” (Deuteronomy 4:39, NKJV)
When Moses made the above statement in his message to the nation of Israel, it was not idle chatter or mere religious sentiment. It was by that time a demonstrated fact. The LORD (YHWH) of Israel had proven Himself as the one and only living God, having defeated all the stone idols of Egypt and having repeatedly provided for the people of Israel during their long wilderness journey.
God is not about religion. God is fact. The universe is not a religious idea, it actually exists. That is a fact. And it exists by the hand, or more precisely, by the Word of God. Human beings, along with all other living creatures on earth, exist by the will of God. It is He who made us. It is He who sustains us. It is He who helps us in our time of greatest need.
As Moses said, the Lord is not merely a God in the heavens someplace, or God in a religious ceremony or shrine or church house. The Lord is God of all things, and He is God everywhere. He is God beyond all space and time, and He is God right here in the now — in the circumstances we face each day. He is God in our hiomes and God in the marketplace. He is God where we work, and He is God where we play. He is the LORD, the God of heaven and earth.
In the days of Moses, Pharaoh was possibly the most powerful man on earth. In the religion and culture of ancient Egypt, Pharaoh was actually considered to be a god himself. This was not such an uncommon idea in those days.
But Pharaoh was not really divine in any sense at all. He was merely born of privilage, one generation in a dynasty. And he was just as capable of defeat as he was of victory.
Moses, on the other hand, had no no delusions about himself. He knew that he was a mere mortal. He knew that he was of Hebrew blood. He knew that he had once killed a man, and that he had then fled into the wilderness to escape the punishment of death.
When he stood before Pharaoh, in the name of the LORD, Moses knew that his life was in God’s hands. If the LORD did not protect him, Pharaoh would likely kill him on the spot.
Moses told Pharaoh all that the LORD had given him to day. He told Pharaoh that the LORD wanted the people of Israel to be set free. Moses stood as a mere mortal giving orders to a man who thought he was divine. Moses stood before the ruler of one of histories most powerful nations, telling him what to do with people under his authority.
In response, Pharaoh said, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, nor will I let Israel go.” (Exodus 5:2, NKJV)
But we now know that Pharaoh did let Israel go. And then, when he changed his mind and chased after the Hebrews, the LORD took out his army at the Red Sea (actually, the Sea of Reeds). Pharaoh found out exactly who the LORD, the God of Israel was and is.
Today, the world is filled with men and women who think so highly of themselves that they feel they can do anything they want. And not in any good sense of that expression. While it is fine and good to recognize the ability of human beings to accomplish whatever God has put into our hearts to do, we do not gain anything by thinking so highly of ourselves that we think God Himself cannot keep us from doing as we please. The Bible teaches that we will reap what we sow — if not in this life, then in the age to come.
It is a mistake to go through this life doing whatever we desire, regardless of what that means to other people. No one has the right to exalt themselves over others, and to use other people to get what they want. We are all the work of God’s hands, so to speak. We are His creation, and He will have the final say in all the matters of our lives.
We do well, then to remember what Moses said: “Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the LORD Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.”
Only God Himself is God. He rules over all the universe. He is the only God. And all humanity will answer to Him. All of us will do well, then, to honor Him in our lives, and to learn His ways.
The Lord has provided all that we need, spiritually, so that we can get to know Him. He has provided, by His own kindness and mercies, a means of rescue and new birth, enabling all who trust in Him to become the children of God. This salvation and spiritual regeneration is provided in Jesus Christ, God’s own eternal Son.
You can discover all the power and kindness of God in Jesus Christ, and you will not find the true God anywhere else. Every truth leads us back to Jesus Christ. Everything God does in human lives brings us back to Jesus. Anything God says draws us back to Christ. Jesus is the answer to all the deepest questions in every human heart.
“Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the LORD Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.”
There is no other name given to human beings by which we can be saved.
Trust Jesus.
