It is not uncommon for people of faith to speak of God as their only hope. David who became the king of Israel often spoke of the Lord as “the Rock of my salvation,” and “my refuge” (safe place), and “my deliverer” or rescuer.
David was a man of action. He was a warrior king, and not always a man of peace, even though he preferred peace to war. He knew exactly what the battle field felt like, and what it meant to stand in a safe place, protected from his enemies while he fought.
These days, many of us in our modern societies try our best to live in peace. it doesn’t always work, of course. Even in a land protected from attacking enemy soldiers, we still have criminals of every kind, and we have court actions and other threats to safety, success and even survival.
It is important for us, I think, to recognize our need of God’s help in every situation we face. Our enemy, after all, is often the ignorance and darkness of evil, rather than a human being or group of people. Even out on the battle field, this is true. If we could simply remove evil from the planet, and get rid of all the ignorance, people would tend to live in peace.
Those who deliberately disturb the peace of their own people, for example, would not do so if they better understood how to get what they want. They want what we all want: to live a life of happiness and satisfaction.
When ignorance reigns, people can be deluded into thinking that freedom and happiness can be bought with destruction. They view human history through eyes that only see the wars and battles. They do not see what actually brought peace and success in most every case. Peace is brought about by agreement and by working together.
Until people begin to at least hope for peace, and for a better life, they will not try to work for those objectives. They will simply try to rob others of whatever they have.
God is the refuge for us all in the troubled days we experience. He gives us not only a solid ground for peace, but He also gives us insight and wisdom to enable us to get through the worst part of the storms that rage in our world.
Through Jesus Christ, the Lord God provides peace, hope and a rescue that reaches all the way down into the deepest parts of the human soul. He is the light and the hope we need. He is the power we need to accomplish great things in the face of impossible circumstances.
God is our rock, our refuge and hope. He is the safe place in every storm and raging battle. God is our way to life in the face of death and ruin.
